CBD OIL in Maryland Veterinary Medicine
I am frequently asked about the use of CBD (cannabidiol) oil for veterinary patients. It appears that a lot of my clients are experimenting with these products. The Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners have released a statement regarding applicable law at both the state and federal levels. In Maryland, all products containing cannabidiol, except for Epidiolex, are Schedule 1 Controlled Substances. Schedule 1 Controlled Substances are defined as drugs with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.
Currently, the Food and Drug Administration has not approved any CBD products for use in animals.
So, as of March 2019, the discussion ends. CBD products are illegal for use in animals.

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 removed CBD oil that is made from hemp, from Schedule 1 at the Federal level. This did not change the Maryland Controlled Substance Act (Criminal Law, Title 5). The change in federal law did not exempt CBD oil that is made from marijuana. Epidiolex is the first, and only, CBD product that the FDA has approved for medical use. It is an anti-epileptic drug indicated for severe forms of human epilepsy.
